 INTRODUCTION

Dr. Fima Lifshitz is completing his five year term as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal and it is with a deep sense of gratitude that the College recognizes his efforts. He has greatly improved the JACN’s format and content as well as its appeal to the nutrition community, as evidenced by a doubling of its impact factor. A large number of spontaneous communications have been received from ACN fellows and members which commemorate Fima’s accomplishments and it is most appropriate that these be excerpted in this tribute. These follow in random order:

"As an Editor-in-Chief, he was always grateful to the Editorial Board for their contributions and he promptly expressed this gratitude to us."

"The prestige that JACN enjoys as one of the premier authoritative journals in the nutrition sciences is no surprise to those who know the efforts he put into the Journal. Dr. Lifshitz’ personal qualities and extensive personal contacts also meant working with him on the Editorial Board became a pleasurable task rather than a chore."

"His broad sense of recognition of good research with appropriate investigations and techniques has been paramount in the success of the Journal. Manuscripts that deserved detailed review brought new authors to the Journal because of national and global respect for the Journal. I have sent some of my manuscripts for review in the Journal for that reason."

"He made a delicate choice of subjects for the Journal and made it readable for all disciplines of Internal Medicine, whether involved in nutrition or not. He also followed the recent trends and hot-points in medicine, such as anti-oxidants, keeping a just equilibrium between facts and fiction."

"The last five years have been full of fresh air and scientific stimulation as well as great cooperation and collegiality among the contributing editors. Our task was made easier as his personal touch and a phone call would persuade people to work a little extra for an editor that cared so much. I trust that JACN will continue to be a first grade journal which the medical community can be proud of, the same way we have felt about it during Fima Lifshitz’ tenure."

"The content is richer, with papers that reflect the work of very important people in the nutrition field. The reviewers worked very seriously with excellent results and benefits to the readers of our Journal."

"Fima is a person of particular qualities, who imprints a mark of excellence in everything he does—no matter how simple or how complex the endeavor. He always matches in a brilliant way any challenge—academic, scientific, and administrative alike. Fima is the complete gentleman; he will always impart a good atmosphere even in situations that arouse tension or conflict."

"Dr. Lifshitz’ eclectic interests always fascinate me. From artwork to organization to the gift of gab, there are few peers. When he decides to ride into the sunset someday, I know he’ll do it with flair."

"Since Fima took over as Editor-in-Chief, he has transformed the Journal into one that is considered one of the best in the field of nutrition. He has accomplished many things such as encouraging the world’s top scientists to submit papers to the JACN. I have been reviewing papers for the Journal for the last couple of years and I have been impressed in the improvement of the scientific quality of the papers that have been submitted."

Dr. Lifshitz is a remarkable physician-scientist with a charismatic personality, and a person with a wonderful sense of humor. Dr. Lifshitz made enormous efforts and was successful in improving the scientific standing of the journal. Even though he tried to be very selective by including only the very best articles in the journal, he was willing to allow most authors to revise and improve their manuscripts for possible publication. He performed his responsibility as editor with kindness and true honesty and insight. In addition to his excellence as an editor, his enthusiasm and positive attitude, Dr. Lifshitz also was able to bring on board the very best editorial assistants, including Sandy Allen, Gladys Garcia-Greenberg and Melanie M. Smith. Let us congratulate Dr. Lifshitz for his leadership and hard work to bring the journal to a new level of excellence

These comments from the membership say it all. Fima, you have set JACN on an upward course of excellence. Your successor cannot help but profit from the standards you have set.
