CD-ROMS FOR NUTRITION EDUCATION
Although the United States has one of the best health care systems in the world, it is overburdened with the expense of chronic disease in terms of both dollars and human costs. Scientific discoveries have solidified a role for nutrition in the prevention and management of most of the leading causes of death in the US; however, few medical schools offer substantial nutrition education to their students. As the leaders of the health care team, physicians are uniquely positioned to emphasize to their patients the importance of nutrition in the prevention and management of chronic diseases. However, most physicians have little, if any, training in nutrition and are ill prepared to give specific advice on this topic to patients.
Barriers to incorporating nutrition into medical school curricula have included lack of resources and personnel to provide this instruction. However, with improved scientific understanding of the role of nutrition in health, many medical schools are considering revising their curricula to include nutrition education. To facilitate this process, the Nutrition In Medicine® (NIM) program was created. NIM is an innovative, effective, flexible and transportable nutrition curriculum that is being developed by a team of physicians and nutritionists. The NIM curriculum is designed for the pre-clinical training of physicians. It incorporates biochemical, clinical and epidemiological elements of nutrition science and includes both the preventive and therapeutic perspectives of nutrition. As the modules are created, they are provided free of charge to all US medical schools. Ten titles will be available as part of three separate series: The Disease Series (Nutritional Anemias; Nutrition and Cancer; Diet, Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease; Diet and (Metabolic) Stress; Diabetes and Weight Management); The Lifecycle Series (Maternal and Infant Nutrition; Childhood and Growth; Nutrition for the Second Half of Life); and the Special Topics series (Nutrition Supplements and Fortified Foods, Sports Nutrition). For more information about these programs or to order topics in the series, please visit the NIM web site: http://www.med.unc.edu/nutr/nim
The Nutrition In Medicine Series is available free to charge to US medical schools only. Medeor Interactive is making the series available to professionals from other health-related disciplines. Please visit the following web site for further information: http://www.medeorinteractive.com
