Controversy has surrounded the consumption of coffee since its introduction to Europeans. While coffee had a reputation among physicians for preventing drowsiness in 17th century England, it was also considered so drying that impotence would result. The Women's Petition Against Coffee complained that men spent too much time drinking coffee and gossiping. Lloyd et al. (p. 256-261) present data that coffee consumption is not detrimental to bone mineral density. Image courtesy of the Folger Shakespeare Library, Washington, DC
