Depicted are two perch and a torpedo fish; the latter was prized for its flesh, liver, and medicinal
uses. The torpedo fish is a tropical, electric ray that was purportedly recommended for treating
the pain of rheumatism and gout in 46 A.D. by Scribonius Largus, physician to the Roman
Emperor Claudius. Today, there is substantial scientific interest in biological effects of omega-3
fatty acids derived from fish. See the paper by Volek et al. on page 383. Red fish motif plate from Campania, Italy 2400
years ago, accession number KM 1084, courtesy of the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology,
University of Michigan.
