About the Cover

Cover Figure

Horus, one of the earliest gods of the ancient Egyptians, was depicted as a falcon. During battle with Set, Horus' eye was plucked out and torn apart. Following his victory the eye was reassembled with a bit of magic added for the missing 1/64th. This made the symbol one of divine protection and was placed on boats and sarcophagi. The symbol also become the basis for the pharmacist's abbreviation for prescription, "Rx" and the eye set in a pyramid is part of the Great Seal of the United States. See the review by Grahn et al. (pg. 106). Illustrated is the eye surrounded by a cobra and vulture on a pectoral of King Tutankhamun from the Cairo Museum.
