On the Cover: Dogon sculpture from Mali has distinguishing characteristics such as an
elongated torso, prominent jawlines and dark or natural wood colors. Although popular in the
West, the meaning of Dogon is often are not well understood by Westerners. For example,
images of hermaphrodites are common. This piece has been variously interpreted as a village
priest, mythical character, primordial being or agent of historical change. See the paper by
