On the Cover: Maps combine elements of science and art. While mapmaking has evolved over
centuries to produce more accurate representations, many remain true works of art. A New &
Accurate Map of the Kingdoms of Naples and Sicily (1747) by Emanuel Bowen (C. 1720-1767),
an English cartographer who was engraver to both George II and Louis XV. The lower right
corner contains a cartouche of an aqueduct. See the paper by Barbagallo et al. (pg. 523) on
nutrition in rural southern Italy.
