On the cover: Folic acid has the potential to reduce risk of several chronic diseases prevalent in
the elderly, including cancer and cardiovascular disease. See the article by Rampersaud et al. (pg.
1). Elderly Lady (c. 1740) is a portrait in pastel on paper by Rosalba Carriera (1675-1757) who
popularized the use of pastels in portraiture. This technique allowed portraits to be completed
much faster than those done in oil paint. Carriera was widely popular and successful through
Europe during her lifetime.
