On the Cover: Both nutrients and non-nutritive compounds whose concentrations in breast milk are dependent on the maternal diet may pass to offspring and have physiologic effects in both mother and child. Compounds synthesized endogenously and xenobiotics absorbed from the GI tract can end up in breast milk. See the review by Dorea (pp. 97-101). "Louise Nursing Her Child" (1898) is a pastel drawing by Mary Cassatt (1844-1926), an American impressionist.
