About the Cover

Cover Figure

College freshmen are commonly thought to gain about 15 pounds - the "Freshmen 15" - during their first year in college. Results of a study by Hajhosseini et al. (pp. 123-127) suggest that gain in weight may be more modest than the Freshmen 15; in an ethnically diverse population of college freshmen studied at San Jose State University in California, weight gain appeared to average five to seven pounds. The cover photograph, of undergraduates participating in "Org Day," an annual event presenting campus organizations seeking to recruit students, especially incoming freshmen, indicates some of the diversity found on most North American campuses today.
