Recent work by Tang (pp. 188-194) indicates that muscle proteolysis induced by swimming may be prevented by branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplementation. The study was conducted on male university students majoring in physical education. Perhaps the most famous swimmer of all times was Leander who, according to legend, swam the Hellespont nightly all one summer to be with his lover, Hero, a priestess of Aphrodite. But one night the storms of coming winter blew out Hero's signal lamp and raised waves which drowned the suddenly unguided Leander. Hero, distracted beyond measure by his death, threw herself into the sea and was herself drowned. Frederic Leighton (1830-1896), one of the greatest Victorian painters, captured the tormented moments she suffered as she came to realize Leander's fate.
