On the Cover: Researchers have found support for the hypothesis that the inclusion of cinnamon extracts in the diet of people who are overweight or obese will reduce oxidative stress and impaired fasting glycemia which are risk factors associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects may be related to the insulin potentiating and antioxidant effects of the cinnamon polyphenols resulting in decreased free radical production. See paper by Roussel et al. (pp. 16–21). Cinnamon is among the oldest and most widely known spices, with many citations in the literatures of ancient times. Made from the bark of an evergreen tree - Cinnamomum verum (synonym: Cinnamomum zeylanicum) -its odor and taste are sharp and its medicinal qualities long known, if not always understood. The cover image is from Franz Eugen Köhler's Medizinal-Pflanzen in naturgetreuen Abbildungen mit kurz erläuterndem Texte: Atlas zur Pharmacopoea germanica austriaca, belgica, danica, helvetica .... Köhler, a late19th century German botanical illustrator, produced some 300 chromolithographs for the three-volume work, published in 1887, which combined accuracy, delicacy and complexity in montages of aspects of the plants, elegantly brought together on the pages. Köhler's book and its illustrations are in the public domain
