Both sufficient exercise and proper diet are required to achieve maximal bone density in
adolescents. See the article by Rozen et al. (pg. 219). Illustrated is a 98 cm tall bronze sculpture entitled
"Fourteen Year Old Dancer" by Edgar Degas. The tinted bronze statue has a cloth leotard, tutu,
and a braid around the hair. A wax version of this was made by Degas in 1880-81 but the bronze
was cast in 1922 after his death. Castings are in collections of several museums including the
Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Mus‚e du Louvre (Paris), and the Museum
Boijmans Van Beuninger (Rotterdam).
