It is believed that beer drinking dates to ancient Mesopotamia and Sumeria 8,000 years ago. Wine has also been produced for 8,000 years while distilled liquor has been made for more than 700 years. While excessive alcohol ingestion is associated with significant medical and behavioral problems, light to moderate intake may offer some net benefit. Zhang et al. (pp. 510-519) present data that heavy drinkers are less accurate in reporting their total energy intake.
