About the Cover

Cover Figure

Machefer, et al., have found that an extreme competition consisting of repetitions of six long races altered enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems, increased membrane damage and induced lipid peroxidation. A moderate dose of a multivitamin and mineral supplementation was sufficient to increase plasma antioxidant vitamin concentrations in healthy endurance athletes and to prevent lipid peroxidation, probably by improving the utilization and/or mobilization of the antioxidant vitamins (pp. 111-120). The Air Force won the 2004 Armed Forces Cross Country Championship, conducted as part of USA Track & Field's National Winter Classic, 7-8 February, Indianapolis, Indiana. The races were run on 4-5 inches of snow, with temperatures ranging from 25-30 degrees. All runners found themselves adjusting to the tough course conditions, particularly as the course crusted up from earlier events. The second event of the day saw Lieutenant Lara Coppinger from Edwards Air Force Base, California, and Lieutenant Elissa Ballas from Fort Sam Houston, Texas, (pictured on the cover) finish first and second respectively in the Women's Long Course.
