About the Cover

Cover Figure

The great white shark pictured on the cover is a surprisingly complex fish, calling into question its popular reputation as an unremitting and preoccupied killer; in reality, the great white is selective and careful in deciding on prey - indeed, far less violent to humans than sharks generally - and able to go weeks without eating. This shark is swimming amid multiple species, appearing all the world a sociable neighbor. The image, taken at Isla Guadalupe, Mexico, in August 2006, won Terry Goss, the photographer, several awards after publication in the Wikipedia in October 2007. As Jenkins et al. (pp. 367-378) point out, reputation does not necessarily translate into fact. Despite public health messages which are uniformly positive, randomized controlled trials of marine omega-3 fatty acid supplementation in relation to coronary heart disease (CHD) have inconsistent outcomes. Due to significant heterogeneity in the response to fish oils, further studies are required before making widespread recommendations for all groups to increase consumption of fish and fish oil.
